My Mischa

Kyle and Sophia have never been sick. Well, not sick enough that they needed to get confined in a hospital or get tested. Aside from the common flu and minor asthma attacks, they have generally been fine. Mischa on the other hand is another case. Ten days ago, during her monthly check-up it has been noticed that the white parts of her eyes were a little yellowish. She was referred to a specialist "just to be sure she's ok" as her pediatrician has put it. The next day, we went to a specialist and we were quite surprised when she ordered a series of tests. Prognosis was not good. I was told that she either has Neonatal Hepatitis or Biliary Atresia.

This week, my Mischa underwent a series of tests that included CBC, Blood Chemisrty, Abdominal Ultrasound, and HIDA Scan. Results were not good. After her follow up check yesterday, the doctor wants to schedule a liver biopsy as soon as possible. She stressed that the biopsy be done immediately. It seems like the tests were pointing to Biliary Atresia (for which surgery is the only way of treatment) and at the moment, biopsy would be the most logical way to "rule it out."

I try to convince myself that there's no way it could be that serious. After all, you wouldn't know she's sick at first glance. She sleeps well, she coos a lot, and she even laughs heartily when her kuya and ate plays with her. How could anything be wrong???

Having a sick baby is entirely new to me. I still can't make myself accept that something so perilous can attack my Mischa whose so small and fragile. Oh, she smells so sweet and her eyes are so big and her arms would often lie on my tummy as she sleeps. What would I not give just so we could save her from all these?
